Gardin Bistro & Patisserie

Kuta, Bali

Gardin is a weird and wonderful eatery

Entering through the restaurant's narrow garden, you find yourself in a kitsch Alice-in-wonderland-like greenhouse. The decoration is strange and beautiful, with clown-like colorful cushions on top of wooden chairs, bunny napkin holders and a soothing sweet smell in the air, this place will awaken your senses and prepare them for the treatment they are about to receive.

Gardin's menu is a varied asian-european fusion. It has entries including cinnamon-and-apple-marinated roasted pork belly, various pastas, saté (skewers) and fish and meats prepared in numerous ways. They also have some crazy inventions, one of which ended up being our favorite meal on all of Bali.

We started out with a prawn-aglio e olio linguini as well as one with lobster. Amazing, al-dente and just as delicious as it looks. The linguine were all coated in a rich silky sauce filled with local herbs and nuts.
The next dish that followed was crazy and incredible.

On the menu it said "beef n' egg", but...

The next dish was a huge surprise and the best part of our lunch. It was listed under the all-day brunch section on the menu and said "beef n' egg",  but what was delivered to our table completely blew our minds as well as our taste buds.

It was a home baked fluffy croissant, worthy of its name and better than most croissants we have tasted on our many trips to Paris. It was stuffed with marinated grilled rib eye strips, fried onions and fried mushrooms as well as a delicious tangy mango chutney. To top it all off were two eggs sunny-side-up. On the side was a small glass of Dijon-mustard.

The taste of the grilled tender rib eye itself was incredible, and mixed together with the fried onions and mushrooms, the runny eggs and the fluffy croissant, this was a weird delicious dish like no other.
A must try if you are in Bali!

Gardin is also a patisserie by name, and has a huge selection of home baked cakes. We chose a chocolate brownie cake and a Mississippi cheese cake.

The chocolate brownie cake had been slightly heated on the top, such that the chocolate was dripping from all sides. Served with vanilla ice cream, strawberries, chocolate sauce and more homemade chocolate crunch.

The Mississippi cheese cake came with mango sauce and cake crumbs.

Both were outstanding and very cheap compared to the food.

Good to know before you go

The place is really cozy and serves amazing high quality food. The service is tremendous and on par with western high class restaurants. All the waiters were incredibly welcoming and spoke perfect english. They have personnel for everything including taking your coat, slicing your cake and waiting your table. The price for the food is very high for Bali standards. But the quality is higher than most other places, and the food itself is probably the best in all of Bali.

Price:

634.000 IDR ($50) for everything mentioned above including a water and a coke (plenty to fill up two very hungry travellers).

Location:

Jalan Petitenget No. 106, Seminyak, Kuta, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia
